The Advantages of Neograft

In this article, we started to discuss why Neograft (automated FUE) is considered the next generation of hair transplant techniques. Today, we will continue that discussion on the advantages of Neograft.

The “strip” technique was previously the most common method of obtaining hair grafts for transplant. There is an unfortunate potential that one or more nerves could also become cut as the strip of scalp is removed. Some nerves are capable of regenerating, but the process is very slow. Sometimes the damage is too great and permanent nerve damage occurs. We have encountered many patients with permanent scalp numbness due to prior “strip” harvesting. While it is not impossible for nerves to be affected during Neograft harvesting, it is extremely rare due to the tiny size and depth of the hair punch. We have yet to hear a report of permanent numbness due to a Neograft procedure.

The results of a hair transplant procedure are also dependent on the “take rate” of the transplants. The “take rate” refers to how many hairs survive the transplant process to full growth after one years time. It is the goal of every hair transplant physician to maximize the take rate.

The “take rate” depends on several factors. Examples include trauma during the handling of the grafts, exposure to heat, and drying out. The more a hair graft is handled, the more likely it is to become damaged. The strip technique unfortunately requires graft handling at several stages of the process. The cutting phases, both at the scalp and again in order to divide the strip into individual grafts, are highly prone to graft damage. Less handling is better.

The Neograft extraction is a no-touch process. The Neograft operator places the device at the site of the hair, and the machine does the rest. The hair graft is punched out and lifted away using vacuum air pressure. The grafts are then stored in a safe, moist environment until they are ready to be sorted and implanted. The Neograft punch creates perfect sized grafts each time that require no further trimming or handling.  In the hands of a skilled Neograft operator, the “take rate” can be much higher than strip harvesting.
