Minoxidil (Rogaine™) for Hair Loss Treatment

As discussed in this post. Medications such as minoxidil and finasteride are one of the possible treatments for hair loss. In today’s post, we will discuss minoxidil (brand name Rogaine™).

Minoxidil is an over-the-counter topical medication that is applied directly to the scalp. It can be purchased in several forms and concentrations, but we recommend the 5% foam version in all cases.

Although the packaging states minoxidil is indicated for use in the crown area only, we recommend placing several dime sized mounds of foam throughout any areas of thinning. These mounds can then be rubbed into the scalp with the fingertips. The foam can be applied once a day. It should be left on the scalp for at least 4 hours before coming into contact with water (swimming or showering) in order to fully be absorbed. I use it myself as part of my bedtime routine. Any excess dripping on to the forehead should be wiped away immediately, as it could cause unwanted hair growth.

Minoxidil’s true benefit comes from slowing the hair loss process. Just as with finasteride, it should be viewed as a way to slow the inevitability of hair loss. Minoxidil can cause miniaturized hairs to become thicker and more darkly pigmented. This can give the illusion of new hair growth, but those expecting to sprout thick coverage in previously bald areas are setting themselves up for disappointment. Those looking for quick change will also be dissapointed.

Unfortunately, once started, minoxidil must be continued for as long as you care about your hair. Once you stop applying minoxidil for several weeks, time will catch up with your hair! All of the hair that should have miniaturized and been lost since beginning the medication, will rapidly undergo that process and “disappear”.

Minoxidil use has a positive effect when used both before and after a surgical hair transplantation procedure. Studies show that it can alleviate some of the impact of the shock phase, as well as lead to a quicker final result.

Minoxidil can be an excellent tool to fight against hair loss, especially when combined with a hair transplantation procedure. Patients should have the right expectation as to what minoxidil can and can’t achieve.
